The New York Susquehanna & Western Technical & Historical Society Inc. was formed in the fall of 1988 by several longtime observers of the railroad who felt that there was a need for an organization to preserve the history of the Susquehanna, its ancestor corporations and the rich railroading history of New Jersey. Since that time, the Society grew to over 500 members from 25 states and has at times had members in Canada, England, Germany and New Zealand. The society is incorporated in the state of New Jersey as a non-profit educational organization. It is also recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt organization, as defined in section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. VolunteerismOur member volunteers come from many walks of life, from mechanics, to college professors to corporate executives, we all come together "workin’ on the railroad" HistoryWe are committed to the preservation of history. Our Maywood Station division is the exemplification of historical restoration. Our goal is to preserve the rich history of railroading, specifically that of the New York Susquehanna & Western Railroad. We believe that it is crucial to pass on the knowledge and history of the "Steam Era" to the next generation. EducationSome of our volunteers come from the railroad world, many do not. What we all have in common is our desire to learn more about history, railroading and life. You can come to us with no background in railroading at all and leave a train engineer. Many of our volunteers have gone on to be professional railroaders. Our training meets or exceeds that offered by the large railroads and is in compliance with all FRA regulations The Delaware River Railroad Excursions Since 2004 the Society has operated the Delaware River Railroad Excursions in Phillipsburg, NJ. 2024 is our 20th year! Maywood Station A Landmark Brought Back to Life, Yesterday and Today The historic landmark Maywood Station houses an eclectic collection of railroad and local history items. The museum offers a virtual timeline into the significance that the station and the railroad had on the development of the local area. The membership meets regularly to restore, preserve and maintain the station as well as archive and update the museum collection. New exhibits and displays are always in motion to enhance the visitor’s museum experience. The museum also has restored historic New York, Susquehanna & Western ALCO S-2 Locomotive #206 and Caboose 24542, which has additional displays and an operating model train layout.
